Welcome to the next in our series of curriculum newsletters. This edition focuses on all things Humanities: History and Geography.
“Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future.” (Sir Michael Palin).
"Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." (Edmund Burke)
As a Historian myself, I am personally, and professionally, passionate about the subject and how it, and Geography, supports pupils' holistic development. From providing opportunities to develop research and problem-solving skills, to encouraging an empathetic view of social issues, Humanities enables our children to view the wider world and their part within it.
Please do visit the History and Geography sections of our website for more information.
Next week, our Year 6 pupils are taking their SATs. They have worked so hard this year, and I would like to wish them lots of luck. You can do it, Year 6!
Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

At Cranleigh C of E Primary School, we are huge advocates of providing opportunities for our children to use blocks as part of their open-ended play in order to explore and create.
Blocks provide the freedom for children to determine what to do and how to do it. They are unrestricted and encouraged to understand that there is no right or wrong way.
Here, our Reception children have been using blocks to create buildings found in Cranleigh and the local area. Do you recognise any?!

If there's one programme that brings History to life for children - and adults! - it's CBBC's Horrible Histories.
Horrible Histories have put together lots of quizzes for children, mainly those in Ket Stage 2, to assess understanding whilst also having fun. Do check them out!
There is a huge variety of books, too, for children to read. You could also choose a book to read together.
Alternatively, check out the Horrible Histories Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on Spotify.

At Key Stage 1, the National Curriculum requires a study of the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some individuals can be used to compare aspects of life in different periods.
In Year 1 this half-term, the children have been learning all about some important historical figures. To help develop their understanding, they have been thinking about themselves and the important things they've personally achieved.
We have so many talented Year 1 children!

In Geography, Year 2 are comparing countries of the United Kingdom, and naming, locating and identifying the world's seven continents and five oceans.

In History, Year 2 have been learning about the Great Fire of London. They have explored what the houses were like in London in 1666 and factors that contributed to the start of the fire. On their trip to The Weald and Downland Living Museum, the children learnt more about what fire was used for and even got to create their own sparks! The children have created fact files to demonstrate their learning. Well done, Year 2!

I've had the pleasure of talking with Trevor Dale, current Cranleigh Lions President, about the work he's doing to support the Grade II listed Old Hospital building in his role as a member of the Cranleigh Heritage Trust.
I have recently written a letter to support a bid for National Lottery funding to ensure the Hospital's preservation as an educational resource for the children in the village. I'll be sure to keep you all updated.
There is a fascinating timeline of the building which shows how important it is, not only to Cranleigh, but also to the understanding of England's history as a whole. From the first building in c. 1445/6 to becoming a hospital in 1859; there have been a lot of changes.
If you have only ever glanced at it whilst walking past, perhaps you could stop and take a closer look at this wonderful building that we're all so privileged to have in our village.

In History, Year 3 have been learning about the Shang dynasty. The children have learnt that during this era - 1600-1046BC - the Shang people were the first in China's history to write. They used animal bones (oracle bones) and turtle shells.

Year 4 had a brilliant time at Butser Ancient Farm on Tuesday.
The visit helped the children learn more about Anglo-Saxon life. The children can now build Anglo-Saxon fences, carve chalk, make clay pots and design copper jewellery!

This Form also outlines the Department for Education's regulations and the school's expectations.

Year 6 have spent time this year learning about the Industrial Revolution as well as how population growth has impacted the manufacturing industry. They particularly enjoyed looking into the population density of different countries and learning about how each country's individual histories have played a key part in the lives of people today.
Year 6 are now looking forward to learning about the impact WW1 had on Britain and how WW11 changed the economy of our country next half-term.
