HEADTEACHER'S MESSAGES
Welcome to the first edition of our 'Let's Celebrate' newsletter; an opportunity for us to share your children's learning and successes in more detail. We are so proud of everything our children have accomplished this term. (Year 4 parents - we are looking forward to celebrating your children after Christmas).
Cranleigh C of E Primary is truly on the countdown to Christmas. And it has been so special to be able to celebrate the festive season with you all this week.
Yesterday, our children enjoyed a yummy Christmas dinner whilst wearing their fabulous Christmas jumpers (staff too!) Thank you to our wonderful Mrs Maple for cooking such a delicious meal.
Our Reception and KS1 (Year 1 and 2) children performed the nativity to parents/carers on 2 occasions, too. We are all so proud of them for demonstrating such confidence and dedication. Thank you to those of you who were able to come along and support.
We all hope you enjoyed our Christmas Fayre today. We are sure the children enjoyed their visit from Santa - with a gift for each child!
A very special thank you to our PTA, The Friends, for all their hard work to make today happen.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.
Mrs Kate Pelazza; Headteacher

Our Wonderful Performers in Reception and KS1!

Well done Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 on a beautiful performance of the Christmas Story.

GoChatter have produced a short video of The Christmas Story told with LEGO. It's fantastic and inclusive, offering 5 different regional accents and subtitles.
Perhaps you could replicate at home and tell your own story? We'd love to see/hear it!

Reception - We're So Proud of You!
This half-term, Reception have been busy learning through their topic, ‘What happens in the dark?'
The children have learnt all about nocturnal animals and, every Friday, they
have baked a variety of goodies, including cheesy hedgehog scones and chocolate hedgehogs. Yummy!
In the classroom, Reception's role-play area turned into a campsite which was enjoyed by everyone; the children especially loved pretending they were on holiday!
Reception also learnt about Remembrance Day and Frank gave a superb description – “We all wear poppies to remember all the soldiers who fight for us”. Absolutely, Frank.

Year 1 have been super busy this term!
In English, the children have enjoyed reading Michael Rosen's book, 'Send for a Superhero!'
They have also worked incredibly hard to create their own 'baddies' and unlikely superheroes. By the end of next week, we are very much looking forward to reading the superhero stories each child is writing.
In Design and Technology, the children have been designing a house for the Three Little Pigs; one that the Wolf can't blow down!
The children have looked at free-standing structures around the school, practised joining materials together and worked with various construction kits to build different structures.
Next week, Year 1 are looking forward to making and evaluating their final designs. Perhaps we have the next Norman Foster or Zaha Hadid in our midst?!
A special highlight this term included Odd Socks Day when Year 1 shared thoughtful comments about how wonderfully unique we all are.
The 'Bearpees' challenge for Children in Need was also very memorable.
Reach for the Stars, Year 2!
This half term, Year 2 have been learning all about space in their topic, 'To infinity and beyond!'
The children have studied Neil Armstrong and compared his mission to
Christopher Columbus’ expedition, identifying the similarities and differences. They have also discussed why these people are both significant individuals in history.
They have read, 'Toys in Space' by author Mini Grey and written letters and stories inspired by the text.
And how could we forget Year 2's part in the school's nativity?! How wonderful!
The children who attend our after-school Disney Club each week have created fun decorations for one of the Christmas trees at St. Nicolas Church.
If you have some time, perhaps you could go and take a look at the Christmas Tree Festival? Trees are on display from today until 11th December.

Year 3 Looking Very Festive!
Look at how festive Oliver Jeffers class looked on Save the Children's Christmas Jumper Day yesterday?!
Thank you to the whole school for the effort you went to.

Our Incredible Year 5 and Year 6!
Over the Autumn term, Year 5 and 6 have read a number of different books to support their learning.
In Year 5, the children began the year by reading 'The Lost Thing’ by Shaun Tan. This followed the theme of belonging and how we all have a place in the world. They made their own ‘lost things’ which really helped their descriptive writing when they wrote their own fantasy narratives. These they then turned into their own books. ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ was Year 5's next focused guided reading text which they used to look deeper at the reactions of different characters and how important author word choices are. Some of the other texts were used to aid their understanding of the world as well as discuss how the pictures are used to express feelings of characters and the atmosphere of different situations. Year 5 also looked at typography during their art lessons which is also an important part of the front covers of these books.
In Year 6, the children have been reading 'Leila and the Blue Fox’ by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. This followed the tale of a girl called Leila who went on a journey of hope and discovery. Throughout the term, the classes wrote blog posts in role, thinking about how Leila would have felt at various crucial points of the story. During guided reading sessions, the children have read a variety of extracts from classical literature and answered questions on each, focusing on the key skills of fact retrieval, inference and word meaning.
PHEW! Well done, Years 5 and 6!

Y5 Design and Technology
Year 5 have really enjoyed designing and making fairground rides.
Just look at Amelia's carousel! She's looking forward to adding the horses next week.
We may have our very own on-site Thorpe Park soon!
Year 6 History
Year 6 have been learning about the Industrial Revolution this term and reflecting on the impact it had on all members of society. One of the figures they've studied is James Watt, inventor of the steam engine.

PODCASTS
I love a podcast/audiobook, particularly one with a historical focus. And I really enjoy playing them for my own children to hear.
