Welcome to the next in our series of curriculum newsletters. This edition focuses on all things Science!
"Science is magic that works." (Kurt Vonnegut).
Our children have all shown themselves to be curious, capable and committed scientists. From growing runner beans in Reception to exploring circuits in Year 6; our children have enjoyed exploring the world around them.
We are adding to the Science page on our website. Please do check it out for further information on what scheme we follow and what your children are learning.
This week, our children have taken part in World Book Week. We have welcomed authors on site delivering workshops and assemblies, dedicated a whole day to poetry and, of course, celebrated World Book Day today. Photos to follow in our final newsletter of the term next week.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend.
Mrs Kate Pelazza; Headteacher

In Science, Year 6 have been investigating electricity, namely how different supply voltages affect the brightness of a lamp. This is key to understanding how electrical circuits work.
The pupils created a hypothesis and then constructed a simple electrical circuit, identifying the effect of changing one component at a time and naming the basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, and switches. Year 6 then evaluated their circuits.
Well done to our 'bright sparks'!!

Reading for Pleasure
Our Year 6 pupils did a fantastic job reading with our Reception children this week. All the children loved every minute; being read to, reading with their peers, and sharing lots of giggles!
We cannot wait for next Tuesday's session!

Our Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children took part in Science Farm Live last week as part of British Science Week.
Presented by farming role models across England and Wales and the NFU Education team, our children explored the Great British countryside and learned how British farmers are producing food for the planet while caring for our natural environment and innovating for the future.

Year 4 really enjoyed watching this, and please don't worry if your child missed it due to swimming, they will have the opportunity to watch it before the Easter break.
Jayce - I learned if you pinch your finger and the skin stays up, then you are dehydrated, but if it goes down you are hydrated.
Bella - I found out that cows give birth.
Esther - A cow's pulse in thirty seconds is double what ours would be.
Thalia - The farmer puts stuff in the cow's body to find out if they are pregnant or not.
Lilou - I found it funny that cows lick their babies after they are born!

Reception have been growing their own runner beans as part of their growth and change project. Just look at how tall the plants are!
The children have had the opportunity to observe and explore a wide variety of plants and flowers. This includes observational painting/drawing opportunities where sunflowers have been placed in the classroom for children to explore.
Perhaps you'd like to listen to Tchaikovsky’s ‘Waltz of the Flowers’ as you enjoy our newsletter?

Year 3 have also been learning about plants and growth.
Through the use of food colouring, the children discovered that plants transport water through their stems.
Year 3 have also planted seeds and discovered that their plants have enormous roots with hairs on them, and collect nutrients to enable their plants to grow.
This week, the children transferred their saplings into bigger pots so they can be put in their own gardens.
How about taking a look at some of these children's books about plant growth?
Well done, Year 3!

I was very fortunate yesterday to attend a Diocese conference where the inspiring Chris Lubbe was speaking.
Chris grew up in a ghetto in Durban, South Africa during apartheid. He became Nelson Mandela's bodyguard for 9 years and has dedicated his life to fighting racial discrimination.
Chris spoke of Nelson Mandela's firm belief in the need to forgive those around you. I was inspired as I thought of our school's half-termly value of FORGIVENESS. Let's try and forgive those around us for there is "...no future without forgiveness." (Nelson Mandela)

Year 1 have been learning about plants and exploring the different trees in our beautiful school grounds. They took some bark rubbings to compare the appearance and texture of different tree trunks. They also measured trees using non-standard methods (a stick!) and counted how many steps to each tree. Year 1 have also been looking at seasonal change and observing signs of spring.
Well done, Year 1!

Please click HERE to read them in full as first published in the 8th March Newsletter.
P.E. Kits
Starting after Easter, children will also be expected to come to school dressed in their P.E. kit on the days they have P.E:

Year 2 have been learning all about animals including humans. They have recapped the different animal groups and have compared the appearances of different animals to their young. We have looked closely at lifecycles and food chains and have carried out an investigation into how humans grow as they get older. The children thoroughly enjoyed measuring their classmates!
Well done, Year 2!
